General Hospital will be celebrating it’s 50th birthday on April 1st in 1963.

The imaginary village of Port Charles and the people that dwell there are the focus of General Hospital.

Upstate New York is the setting for the imaginary town.

According to History.com, producers created General Hospital in the early 1960s to “capitalize on the success of prime-time medical dramas like as Dr. Kildare and Ben Casey.”

Despite receiving low ratings at times, such as in the 1970s, General Hospital has persevered.

Elizabeth Taylor, the original Helena Cassadine, first featured on the show in the early 80s.

“General Hospital, one of four remaining daytime dramas, has the record for most Outstanding Daytime Drama Emmy Award victories, winning the coveted Emmy Award a record 13 times,” according to the show’s description.

In 2018, the program marked its 55th anniversary and aired its 14,000th episode, which was filmed in Hollywood.
